It's a Wrap for the Ice Cream Social for Dogs, 2018

I always like photographing people and their pets. I actually call it Creatures and Their People. And I like learning, especially with a group of talented pet photographers and that's exactly what I got when I signed up for Kristie Lee's Pets and People Workshop in downtown Los Angeles. Well, not only DTLA but in portrait photographer extraordinaire Sue Bryce's studio. Sue was off doing her own workshop in Italy and Kristie ran the workshop from the temporarily vacated studio. What Sue left behind, though, besides a loft filled with gorgeous natural light, was her precious dog Cookie Bryce. If you're familiar with Sue Bryce, you're familiar Cookie, too. Cookie is Sue's black pug and she is ...

It's a Wrap for the Ice Cream Social for Dogs, 2018

Karen called because she has a mother and daughter pair of dogs, Olive and Oona -- beautiful Welsh terriers. Olive is 8 1/2 and Oona is 7. Karen wanted to get in a shoot before Olive showed her age... she looks beautiful now. Olive, you'll recognize, because she has the curlier coat of the two. Oona has a straighter, redder coat. It took me a while to figure it out. When we first talked, we were in the middle of the drought here in Los Angeles. Well, a good five years into it and everything was brown. But as luck would have it, by the time we could get the shoot on the books, the skies had opened up and it rained. And rained. And rained. And then when the sun peeked through, it turned green. ...

New Maple Prints Are In!

It's a Wrap for the Ice Cream Social for Dogs, 2018

Just got these new samples in and I am impressed! I wasn't expecting to like them as much as I do but I love them. They are images on maple... the Xolo is printed where the wood is still natural, which is perfect for this house with its organic backbone, and the cute little mutt is where the wood has been coated with white first so the grain shows but the natural color of the wood doesn't. Both gorgeous, depends on the dog and the look you're going for. They come with borders of various sizes and without. But for the right house, these just might be the right prints! They join my lineup of metal and canvas wall prints. On the metal front, I've added a mid-gloss finish to go along with the ...

Revisiting the Past

It's a Wrap for the Ice Cream Social for Dogs, 2018

I know it sounds like you're about to enter a Southern Gothic novel with a blog title of "Revisiting the Past," but what today's post is about is ruminating on an image, thinking about ways to improve it, and improving it. At least that's what I hope I did. I photographed three Vizslas, actually three times I photographed them, and the sunset shoot was certainly my most spectacular. My favorite is of just one of them -- a silhouette of Csilla, who looks like she is chasing a sailboat. Well, I'm not completely sure it's my favorite, I just like it a lot. A couple of things always bugged me about it. The sailboat is pretty small and the sky is really washed out. I wanted to show this ...

OMG, Look at Bailey, a Gorgeous Shar Pei

It's a Wrap for the Ice Cream Social for Dogs, 2018

This dog... I can't even... she is just too much. Look at this face! Just look at it! She's this taupe colored shar pei (is taupe even a color for dogs?), somewhere between gray and brown. And she has a little face like a rhino. She's 7 and lives with her parents, Natalie and Jon, and brother Winston, a shar pei/boxer mix (mostly boxer, if you just look at him).We had a pet photography session back in February, a surprise birthday present from Natalie to her husband Jon. They are just the funnest couple, they really are. They wondered if their dog obsession was bordering on lunacy. Of course not! Never enough obsession! This post I'm just featuring Bailey because Winston is having a special ...
