A Winter Pet Photo Shoot in Los Angeles

I zipped down to Newport Beach yesterday to photograph some new dogs that the Little Red Dog and Mutts in Need are trying to find homes for. First, let me tell you a little about my experience. So I am driving down the street to where Mutts in Need is where I'm going to meet Kym. I heard barking. Lots of barking. And as I'm driving down Riverside Drive, a cul-de-sac, it dawns on me that most of the houses I'm seeing in this residential neighborhood have "kennel" or something written on them. These are just homes, not businesses, or at least that's what they look from the outside.Kym told me that about 20 years ago, this street was zoned agricultural and that's why these residental homes ...

A Winter Pet Photo Shoot in Los Angeles

Shelter Hope Pet Shop in Thousand Oaks is a really nice pet store. I've said it once, I'll say it again. It's a very pleasant place to spend some time. Shelter Hope showcases rescued animals and shelter dogs at a storefront at the Janss Marketplace. It's really remarkable, the dogs stay in little gated pens -- white picket fences -- and go home with a foster family every night. I first heard of the organization after watching a Hope for Paws rescue in which the super cute dog was taken in by Shelter Hope and eventually adopted.I contacted Kim Sill, who created Shelter Hope, and she allows me to come in and photograph the dogs there in hopes of getting them adopted. I found a really ...

A Winter Pet Photo Shoot in Los Angeles

I want to let Hope for Paws tell you all about this... don't worry, I will tell you about it here, too... but Lisa Arturo and I did four shoots yesterday, starting out on a beautiful Sunday morning in Hollywood and ending in a downpour in Santa Monica. We had a magnificent, hard day but it was just great and when you hear about it, you'll love what you see. But in the meantime, I am going to show you this little sneak peek. This little girl is Maya.Hope for Paws in Los Angeles does amazing rescue work, taking forgotten, unloved, discarded dogs off the streets and fields and deserts and cares for them before sending them off to be fostered, and then adopted into wonderful new homes. Eldad ...

A Winter Pet Photo Shoot in Los Angeles

I did a quick photo shoot at Shelter Hope Pet Shop in Thousand Oaks the other day and met just a fabulous group of people and dogs. The "shelter" is at Janss Marketplace off of Wilbur Avenue. What's unique about this shelter is that when the shop closes up at night, the dogs go home to their foster homes. They are of course looking for a family that they can live their lives out with but in the meantime they are in a very great situation. It's a non-profit shop staffed by volunteers. Sales of merchandise from their retail shop goes directly back into the organization. They really have the most adorable adoptable dogs. The facility is as nice as any i've seen and the staff is truly fabulous.I ...

Introducing Evie

A Winter Pet Photo Shoot in Los Angeles

I met Evie just before the new year turned. She has a ferocious bark but boy, that dog is one sweet little girl.Evie, an American Staffordshire Terrier mix -- yes, that's the pit bull line -- has been fostered by The Little Red Dog for more than three years. PJ Rosch of TLRD said she needed some nice photos so I went to Desert Hot Springs to photograph her.Why she hasn't gotten her permanent home yet, I don't know, but she is full of sweetness. She gets along with other dogs... she currently lives with a Mastiff and a Pomeranian... from one of the largest dogs to one of the smallest. And Evie is somewhere in between. But she doesn't like cats, I'll just be up front about that. If you have a ...
