Modern Pet Portraiture in Los Angeles
The Post in Which I Answer 20 Questions
Monday, April 25, 2022
Kirby Howell-Baptiste: Yeah, baby I'm going to ride your coattails!

I was asked by a Santa Monica College photography student to answer 20 questions for a class assignment. She promised it wouldn't appear anywhere but in her class. But since I spent some time answering them, I figure I'd share them with you. Also, I'm a former reporter and one of my editors said I couldn't clear my throat in 15 inches. That means, I'm wordy. And this is wordy. But here you go!What would you consider to be an ideal workday? I usually work late so my ideal day would be to have a shoot doing my signature style, transfer my images to my computer, have dinner, and then start to do the post-processing. I really enjoy the post-processing because that’s where you create ...

The Dreaded End-of-Life Sessions

Kirby Howell-Baptiste: Yeah, baby I'm going to ride your coattails!

That's blunt, isn't it? End of life. Agnes Sligh Turnbull said, "Dogs' lives are too short. Their only fault, really." I include all pets. But the truth is, we are all going to have to say goodbye to our most precious companions one day. And it hurts, oh, does it hurt. When we get the dreaded diagnosis, our world is rocked. Shock first, but we know pain and sadness is around the corner.Look, I'm not trying to be a mercenary photographer but please, please consider a professional portrait session with you and your pet. In fact, I don't really care who you choose as your photographer but I do care that you get that session. Besides searching for Los Angeles pet photographers, you can also look ...

The Cinematic Edit

Kirby Howell-Baptiste: Yeah, baby I'm going to ride your coattails!

What is my cinematic edit? It's kind of shifting the colors a bit so they aren't natural but interesting. Call it color grading, as film editors do, or as I now call my cinematic edit. I became interested in color grading as I really started noticing it in both film and photography. I mean, bop me over the head but it's been around forever. Look at movies. The colors aren't a realistic portrayal of a scene, they are an interpretive or emotional portrayal. They make you feel something, they signal something.Any sci-fi futuristic kind of movie is somewhere going to have a blue steely tone. It's cold. It's space. Any desert scene is going to be brown and dusty and will give you the feeling of ...

Feeling a Bit on the Silver Side

Kirby Howell-Baptiste: Yeah, baby I'm going to ride your coattails!

You guys know I compete in photography competitions. At least since 2017, when I entered the Professional Photographers of America's International Print Competition. The rules are a bit different in this competition. You can enter a maximum of four images in the Photographic Open. There are two categories in PPA -- a merit image (worth 1 merit) or a loan image (a higher standard worth 2 merits). Or actually three categories. No merit. This January, one of my images -- the one of the Weimaraners -- was the second place Grand Imaging Award finisher in the animal category for IPC and I got quite a handsome trophy for it along with two merits. All four of my images either merited or went loan ...
