Happy Halloween!

It's been so long, my friends! A very, very busy month as I finished the book by the October 15 deadline, then began to fulfill other orders plus squeeze in a couple of really fun dog and cat photography shoots! But now it's near Halloween and I finally completed what I guess you would call a Halloween Storytelling image. Yes, it's my friend Luna, the border collie mix, who is one of my greatest muses because of how expressive she is.I don't know if you watch "The Handmaid's Tale" on Hulu but I love it. Well, love is a strong word. It's sometimes very hard to watch, especially the second season. It was pretty brutal but of course I was addicted to it and hooked my sister on it as well. For ...

Photo Compositing in Pet Photography

Happy Halloween!

Quite often when I say I do pet photography composites I'm met with a blank stare. It's just simply that a lot of people don't really know what a composite is. What seems like such a natural word in my world may as well be another language to someone else. So I'm going to break it down a bit.In general, with compositing, you are creating a scene with with at least two elements that weren't photographed together. Now the end results can be for different things. Say I did a pet photography shoot with three dogs. Two are looking at the camera, one isn't. Or there is a family of a large number of animals but it's pretty difficult to wrangle them all together. In this case, I can swap out heads ...

How to Find a Pet Photographer

Happy Halloween!

Right off the bat, this is going to sound self-serving. I'll stipulate to that. But it is something that is weighing on my mind and I wanted to offer my advice and maybe it's something for you to consider. The question is, how do you choose a pet photographer that's right for you?I think the first thing people take into consideration is price. Pet photographers are all over the spectrum when it comes to what they charge for a session and products. There are super inexpensive pet photographers and those that make you gasp and a range in between. In general, the less expensive photographers have less experience or they have a day job that subsidizes their photography and they are pretty happy ...

The Swimming Border Collie of Ross Castle

Happy Halloween!

When I was in Ireland last month, we visited Ross Castle in Killarney and there we met -- well, maybe not met since we weren't formally introduced -- a lovely Border Collie who just couldn't get enough of chasing a stick in the lake, or Lough Leane, as it likes to be known as. In front of the castle, a man tossed the stick and every time the collie came back with it, she cried and barked for it to be thrown again. It was pretty funny, she just wouldn't tire out. So of course I took photos. I didn't have my camera with me that does good action shots but I managed to get a few.And when I came back from Ireland, I saw that one image had a really good expression, just prime for a composite. But ...

Breaking Bad, the Kiwi and Mango Edition

Happy Halloween!

I was browsing through my favorite cat hat maker's site a few months ago and it finally struck me. I'd seen the Jesse Pinkman beanie before... and the Heisenberg hat. But I hadn't thought of creating something with the two of them together. And since I have two cats...I got the ball rolling with Amelie of ToScarboroughFair on Etsy. We first learned of this shop when we did the cat calendar for Sophos and our prop coordinator ordered quite a few chapeaus for the shoot from there. This is the shop Kiwi's aviator cap came from and how handsome was he?So I took measurements of Kiwi and Mango, ordered the hats, then looked for more "Breaking Bad" props. In all honesty, they're pretty easy to ...
