A DTLA Pet Photography Shoot

Oh, it cracks me up every time I write this, which turns out is fairly often, but AVID readers of this blog -- get it... avid... we don't have any avid readers of this blog! -- know I love doing pet photography composite work. It's really fun because you can put a dog or a cat in a situation they would never be in. Then you put in the minute details to sell the whole of it. I did another one tonight based on the artist rafy A's Surreal Fantasy Manipulation Tutorial. Now for those avid readers, you might recall another pet photography composite I did back in March called Luna at Sea. I still love that one but it's completely different. Just go back and forth between the two of them, you'll ...

And the Frenchie Goes Moo

A DTLA Pet Photography Shoot

I got an email from a potential client who wanted her Frenchie photographed. Time is of the essence, she wrote. It turns out her little puppy, Zola Budd, was growing up and she waned to capture a certain look. I called her and she told me what she wanted. Zola is a piebald French bulldog... black and white... just like a Holstein cow. Her vision was to have a gigantic Zola, who really was just a 7-pound puppy, in a meadow with tiny dairy cows. Could I do it? Why, yes I could!Oh, I salivated over this commission! You know I love me my Storytelling Sessions and I love collaborating with pet owners to create a one-of-a-kind piece of art. Don't get me wrong, I love my regular sessions, too, but ...

A Photo Composite of Luna at Sea

A DTLA Pet Photography Shoot

You know I love Luna. That little border collie has been my muse through many photo composites. She had the trial lens glasses on, she rocked a fez in my Moroccan image, she was very wary in the woods. I specifically photographed her in order to do some composites and so every now and then, I leaf through the Luna library, see an expression I like, and create a composite. So I sometimes spend a little too much time on Facebook and I came upon a fantastic composite of a young boy on a wooden boat at sea in the fog. The wooden boat was actually a model. The fog was created from dry ice. I thought, I can do that. Now my image was inspired by that photographer's, it really looks nothing at all ...

Mango, the Song Styler

A DTLA Pet Photography Shoot

My boy Kiwi kind of steals the spotlight. He is energetic, rambunctious, completely humorous. Mango, on the other hand, is a much more reserved fellow. Sweet as all get out but a little more sedate. Dignfied. Asleep. Not long ago, I photographed the cats in the Victor Strebneski style. They are dramatic, grainy portraits. One would say they are reserved for people but I am, first and foremost, a pet photographer, so naturally I wanted to incorporate the Strebneski style in animals.I had an idea today to take one of those images and turn it into a nightclub act. Honestly, I thought it would be Kiwi in his tuxedo, also known as his birthday suit. He is an extremely handsome boy and I thought ...

A Very Holiday Portrait

A DTLA Pet Photography Shoot

Assignment: Photograph Three People, Three Dogs for Holiday CardWhen I got the email from a referral, I wasn't sure I was the right photographer for this session. But once everything was underway, it clicked. Literally. My clients were into cosplay, Steampunk style specifically. And they had just adopted a terminally ill dog that had a leg amputated. Morgan got the idea to have Leila photographed as Tiny Tim and it snowballed from there. We went Victorian. Hard to believe, but we photographed each dog and person individually, then put them on a background of Morgan's choice. It was crazy. Crazy cool. After that, they wanted one of four people with four dogs. The space we had to work with was ...
