The Birth of Luna -- A Composite

You know the Birth of Venus, right? That gorgeous Botticelli masterpiece depicting Venus emerging from the sea to ride to the shore on a shell, blown by the zephyrs and clothed in finery? I was lucky enough to see it in the Uffizi Gallery in Florence quite a few years ago and it left a lasting impression. Botticelli, you have a future in art, I think! Don't let them tell you otherwise!Well, I'm between pet shoots right now, just working on some corporate and acting headshots, and I got to missing my animals. I thought of lovely Luna, the border collie mix I adore and who has been the subject of so many of my practice composites. Now I won an award for the photo I was thinking of so Luna had ...

The Birth of Luna -- A Composite

Last year, Hope for Paws asked me to photograph a pit bull mother and her four puppies that Eldad Hagar and his team rescued. I was happy to do it and actually had two photo shoots with Lexi and her puppies. This weekend, I went to The Little Red Dog's Founder's Day (TLRD fostered the puppies and mom until they were ready to be adopted) in Lake Forest and Lexi, Cooper and Beamer were there! I really don't think they recognized one another. But it was great to have them reunited.Cooper is being raised by Jennifer and Jeff Harmell, who adore him. Beamer is brother to an older, protective sister named Sydney and is owned by Mark and Denise Needham. And Lexi, who was the first of all five to be ...

The Birth of Luna -- A Composite

I love shooting for Hope for Paws and when Lisa Arturo contacted me, I made some time in my schedule to meet up with her again and finally meet Eldad Hagar, who does so many of the daring rescues and creates really heartbreaking, emotional videos (with if not quite a happy ending, a to-be-continued ending in which the dog is looking for its forever home. It's all good but by the time I'm finished watching them, I'm pretty much a sobbing pile of tears). The reason for the call? Lisa and Eldad rescued Thor from a garbage pile. I mean, a huge, tall, kind of frightening trash heap where he had been living. It was quite a harrowing rescue because, well, you can see it here. You'll see him ...

Hope for Paws Puppy Photo Shoot!

The Birth of Luna -- A Composite

I recently traveled to Orange County to photograph a mom pit bull and her four puppies. The mom, Harper, had lived on the streets for two years before being rescued. She was found with her little litter of newborns and the family is being fostered in Newport Beach. If I'm a little vague on details, it's because I want the rescue to be able to publicize the rescue. They deserve the accolades, rightfully so,The foster mother is pretty sure all the puppies will find homes by Christmas but the pitbull mom is a bit iffy. She has cropped ears and kind of a sad expression -- some call it RBF -- on her face but she truly is just a sweetie. I photographed her and her babies with no problems at all ...

Dudley the Aviator

The Birth of Luna -- A Composite

Dudley the "Aviator." Now I put "aviator" in quotes because one of Dudley's dads decided to get the D-dog a $7 aviator outfit for Dudley's Halloween costume. It just wasn't good. File that under the old adage, "Ya get what you ya pay for." For starters, the scarf was about three sheets of toilet paper long. Dudley, a pit bull, has a bigger neck than about four toddlers put together and this wasn't big enough for one small child. Dudley's other dad went on a mission to replace the scarf and came back with granny's pashmina. And a dog's head, in particular a pit bull, is pretty darn big and let's face it... not human shaped. My suggestion was to take the aviator's helmet and cut a semi-circle ...
