Kim Sill has produced "Saved in America," a documentary on her findings and subsequent protests of the puppy mill industry along with her admiration for the boots on the ground volunteers of animal rescues.

saved in america posterThe documentary opened Friday for a weeklong run at the Agoura Hills Stadium 8. Kim founded Shelter Hope Pet Shoppe, which now has shops in Thousand Oaks, Sacramento and Santa Clarita. They are model pet shops because the animals offered for adoption come straight out of the shelters, not puppy mills. Shelter Hope is one of my favorite organizations and I met Kim because I offered to photograph some adoptable animals for them. I also created the poster for the documentary, including the photography of the puppies in the flag.

I went to Saturday's screening, which included the actress Katherine Heigl and her mother Nancy, who together founded the Jason Debus Heigl Foundation for animal rescue. Katherine has poured literally millions of her dollars into animal rescue and I photographed several Heigl Foundation dogs on Saturday in search of their forever homes.

Several different rescues will be the beneficiaries of the box office on each day the documentary screens. Still to come (along with their executives) are the Brittany Foundation, Eastwood Ranch Foundation, Hope for Paws, Bark n Bitches, Bound Angels, and SPCA LA.
