The Boys Assist Me in a Pet Photo Shoot

I'll be blunt, I really miss photographing dogs. If I miss anything during this coronavirus lockdown, aside from having income, it's getting to meet all the pets and their parents. Mostly I photograph dogs but occasionally I take portraits of cats. In any event, my two boys, Kiwi and Mango, haven't had their pictures taken for a while aside from the occasional phone photo. But in this lockdown, I thought of what I believe is a brilliant concept -- ha ha, probably just another harebrained idea. I ordered some props and built a little set for this project. And I originally hadn't conceived it for animals but then I thought, oh, that would really make it. And so I enlisted the services of my ...

Introducing Dog Noir

The Boys Assist Me in a Pet Photo Shoot

It’s dusk in Los Angeles. Palm trees black against a cobalt sky. Horizon glowing like a cigarette’s lit end. You and your dog as restless as the Santa Anas. You want to hit L.A.’s gritty streets to sniff up something new. Here it is . . . Dog Noir – an uncommon photo shoot.Transform into a film-noir character – gumshoe, damsel in distress, gangster, gun moll, femme fatale – and head with your dog to an iconic L.A. film-noir location. Does it look like a 1940s, black & white movie still starring you and your dog? That’s the point, baby.Oh, I've been busy behind the scenes and I'm finally ready to introduce my latest project! It's called Dog Noir ...

The Boys Assist Me in a Pet Photo Shoot

Yo, you've seen these all before but hey, it's the season and time to trot them out again. My creepy Halloween composites. In fact, I think the blue dog in the forest was one of the first composites I ever created. I was super proud of myself because I got the blue of the dog very close to the actual blue of the background photo, for starters, but I also shaded the dog, giving highlights and shadows. That little change made an enormous contribution to the dimensional aspect of it. Anyway, enjoy them once again!

The Boys Assist Me in a Pet Photo Shoot

Nothing brings me more joy than my own pets and I hope it's the same for you. I have two cats adopted last June... they were both approximately 3-years old at the time but really, who knows? Anyway, the boys, Mango, the all-black cat, and Kiwi, the tuxedo -- or the Gentlemen House Cats, as we call them -- have, or "had", I should say, because their habits have once again changed -- a tendency to race through the hallway in the wee hours of the morning. So I created a composite of what I imagine their antics are. I can't see them actually playing soccer, but it sures does sound like they are.We adore them, they are full of humor and boy energy and just a lot of fun to have around. So I ...

The Boys Assist Me in a Pet Photo Shoot

I am taking a portrait lighting class from the photographer extraordinaire Don Giannatti -- known to his disciples as WizWow -- and this is the first week. We are studying master photographers each week, then doing portraits that we submit for critique and review. Now you know I love me the animals but I also photograph people (what? You didn't know that? Check out the last two galleries on my site, they'll take you right to where the people live).  Our first photographer is the Chicago photographer Victor Skrebneski. His work is interesting, certainly not a lighting style I've ever achieved on purpose. I'm sure he does many different kinds of lighting but the work we are studying is ...
