Photo Compositing in Pet Photography

The Cinematic Edit

Quite often when I say I do pet photography composites I'm met with a blank stare. It's just simply that a lot of people don't really know what a composite is. What seems like such a natural word in my world may as well be another language to someone else. So I'm going to break it down a bit.In general, with compositing, you are creating a scene with with at least two elements that weren't photographed together. Now the end results can be for different things. Say I did a pet photography shoot with three dogs. Two are looking at the camera, one isn't. Or there is a family of a large number of animals but it's pretty difficult to wrangle them all together. In this case, I can swap out heads ...

Drinking Soda by the Ocean

I met Soda, the Wheaten terrier, and her parents John and Clare yesterday at the Huntington Dog Beach. For as much coastline as we have in southern California, it sure is kind of a shame that we only have three dog beaches. But I digress. Soda is 9-years-old and all through her life, her parents took her to the dog beach at least once a week. She's older now and only goes about once a month. And she has arthritis so when she comes back from the beach now, she needs a couple of doggy aspirin. She sure wanted to get in that water, though! Here it was, the first day of April, and Soda is really one of the few dogs out there in the sea. It was an overcast day so I was a little fearful of her ...

I'm a member of the Professional Photographers of America organization, which annually holds an International Print Competition. For the past two years, I've been entering and it's tough. Last year, one of my images went "Loan," the highest category but the other three in my case went zippity doo-dah. This year four out of four images in my case earned a merit, which made me a bronze medalist. Here's the press release from the PPA.Los Angeles Photographer Named Bronze Medalist at International Photographic Competition Diana Lundin of Modern Pet Portraiture is honored by peers and jurors for high-quality photography.(Los Angeles, CA) – Diana Lundin of Modern Pet Portraiture ...

A Romp in the Park with Sailor

This was a really fun session for me, I must admit. Dad Dino was the high bidder of a pet photography session with me and because we live close to each other we decided to meet at one of the gorgeous Los Angeles parks near us for a late afternoon with Sailor.Sailor is magnificent. We started off the session with her running. The sun was casting beautiful golden light and she just ran after the ball like a thoroughbred. We got several action sequences before moving on to some family portraits with Dino and his husband David. Now you never think you're going to need more light when the sun is pretty bright but that's usually exactly what you need so I set up one light to get a quick series. ...

I got the inquiry from my potential client about photographing her and her husband's sweet puppy before she gets too much older. A black and white Cocker Spaniel mix. And at some point in the future, she'd probably want to have the two cats photographed as well. (Sound of record screeching!) Wait, we can do the cats at the same time! It will save you money! And thus began the shoot of Piper, the puppy, and the two cats, Monkey and Cooper. And how we did it? Remember the new backdrops and the Vanity Fair style shoot? Yep, that's exactly what we did with the industrial stool. Now Monkey came with a warning. Maybe a little too shy. He was hanging out in the "catio" when I arrived. So we ...
