DISCLAIMER: To be honest, just because I've been posting a lot of composites on the blog lately doesn't mean I like the regular pet photography sessions any less. I love them, I really do. I assure you, I love it. It's just when you have a chance to create something out of your own imagination in collaboration with a client, there's a certain magic that can happen. With that in mind, I wanted to show you a composite that a client wanted created for her company's holiday card. They are talent scouts and the previous year, we took the three of them against a gray backdrop and planted them in a jungle scene. Now because there were only people involved that year, I didn't post the image on my ...

In the Wilds of Malibu

Spencer wanted to surprise Brooke, his girlfriend of six years, with a photo shoot of their three-year-old goldendoodle Pickles. I had just scouted out a particular location in Malibu that I was keen to shoot at when Brooke picked it from my list of locations. This particular place, Charmlee Wilderness Park, is way off the beaten path... high above the hills overlooking the gleaming Pacific. At the right time of year, the meadow is green and the place is lousy with wildflowers in all hues -- orange, yellow, purple, blue, red. It's ridiculous that much gorgeousness would be bestowed upon one place.Off we went in the middle of April, just as the meadow was turning into a shade of gold of ...

Happiness is indeed a warm puppy, don't you agree? In honor of National Puppy Day, here's a puppy! Don't you just want to smell their breath and bury your face into their necks? Ugh. Puppies. The reason the word cute was invented. That's all I've got for today but it's more than enough. Puppy. ~Sigh~

Six and a Half Pairs of Eyes, No Photoshop!

The Cinematic Edit

When I first started out in pet photography, I managed to photograph four tiny dogs, all looking at me at once. I was pretty sure it was a fluke. It might have been, I don't know, but yesterday I had my big score -- one human and six dogs. I say six and a half pairs of eyes because one of them, Quixote, the Xolo, only has one eye.Now I have photographed this tiny pack before including their parrot siblings but I photographed them separately, then composited the eight of them together. The large canvas of them remains one of my all-time favorites to this day. It is jaw-dropping. But when I was at Sharon's house last April, I only had flashes with me that were powerful enough to capture nice ...

Wishing You Much Joy This Season

OK, I've been wanting to do this photo for about a month now and I was going to drag out the Gentlemen House Cats for it but lucky me, I got Puppy instead! Puppy's owner contacted me for a holiday shoot and because Puppy had just come back from the groomer, well, sooner was better than later. As usual, I brought along some seamless paper and created a studio inside the owner's home. That works out great for a photo session with dogs -- or cats -- because that's where the pet is most comfortable... in the home.By the way, this is my ultramarine blue seamless paper, I just love it, it's so versatile and animals look great against it. I had in mind "It Came Upon a Midnight Clear" when I ...
