A Romp in the Park with Sailor

This was a really fun session for me, I must admit. Dad Dino was the high bidder of a pet photography session with me and because we live close to each other we decided to meet at one of the gorgeous Los Angeles parks near us for a late afternoon with Sailor.Sailor is magnificent. We started off the session with her running. The sun was casting beautiful golden light and she just ran after the ball like a thoroughbred. We got several action sequences before moving on to some family portraits with Dino and his husband David. Now you never think you're going to need more light when the sun is pretty bright but that's usually exactly what you need so I set up one light to get a quick series. ...

The Welsh Terriers -- Olive and Oona

Karen called because she has a mother and daughter pair of dogs, Olive and Oona -- beautiful Welsh terriers. Olive is 8 1/2 and Oona is 7. Karen wanted to get in a shoot before Olive showed her age... she looks beautiful now. Olive, you'll recognize, because she has the curlier coat of the two. Oona has a straighter, redder coat. It took me a while to figure it out. When we first talked, we were in the middle of the drought here in Los Angeles. Well, a good five years into it and everything was brown. But as luck would have it, by the time we could get the shoot on the books, the skies had opened up and it rained. And rained. And rained. And then when the sun peeked through, it turned green. ...

The Birth of Luna -- A Composite

You know the Birth of Venus, right? That gorgeous Botticelli masterpiece depicting Venus emerging from the sea to ride to the shore on a shell, blown by the zephyrs and clothed in finery? I was lucky enough to see it in the Uffizi Gallery in Florence quite a few years ago and it left a lasting impression. Botticelli, you have a future in art, I think! Don't let them tell you otherwise!Well, I'm between pet shoots right now, just working on some corporate and acting headshots, and I got to missing my animals. I thought of lovely Luna, the border collie mix I adore and who has been the subject of so many of my practice composites. Now I won an award for the photo I was thinking of so Luna had ...

A Winter Pet Photo Shoot in Los Angeles
Thursday, January 05, 2017

You read winter and if you're not from one of the temperate states, maybe you think snow. Well, my friends, this pet photography photo shoot does not have any snowy elements. In fact, on the day we photographed these four dogs and two cats on an estate overlooking the Pacific Ocean at the end of December, it was pretty darn toasty outside, right around 80 degrees. Some would actually call it hot, at least I know I was sweating when we were shooting outside the bright, brilliant sunlight of mid-day Los Angeles. But anyway, I got a chance to photograph Cooper, Kitty, Scooter, Ink, Spotty and Titan. All with very distinct personalities.I loved this shoot. Yes, it took a long time, what with six ...

And the Frenchie Goes Moo
Friday, October 28, 2016
Vanity Fair, Young Hollywood Cover

I got an email from a potential client who wanted her Frenchie photographed. Time is of the essence, she wrote. It turns out her little puppy, Zola Budd, was growing up and she waned to capture a certain look. I called her and she told me what she wanted. Zola is a piebald French bulldog... black and white... just like a Holstein cow. Her vision was to have a gigantic Zola, who really was just a 7-pound puppy, in a meadow with tiny dairy cows. Could I do it? Why, yes I could!Oh, I salivated over this commission! You know I love me my Storytelling Sessions and I love collaborating with pet owners to create a one-of-a-kind piece of art. Don't get me wrong, I love my regular sessions, too, but ...
