Our DogVacay Ice Cream Social for Dogs Photo Shoot!

The Swimming Border Collie of Ross Castle

Oh, if you know anything about me by now, you know I can't resist photographing dogs eating ice cream. It's the best. We just did this shoot again, photographing more than 40 dogs getting their brain freeze on. This time, Nicky Campa the Los Angeles manager for DogVacay (and a client of mine -- I photographed her dogs Tino and Izzy last year) invited me to do this shoot at the Yappy Hour she was sponsoring at General Assembly in Santa Monica. It was pretty fabulous. Chaotiic, but fabulous. You know, the genius thing about the ice cream social is you don't really have to get the dogs' attention. The beauty is in watching them attack that cone... sometimes petitely, sometimes in a ferocious ...

The Swimming Border Collie of Ross Castle

I zipped down to Newport Beach yesterday to photograph some new dogs that the Little Red Dog and Mutts in Need are trying to find homes for. First, let me tell you a little about my experience. So I am driving down the street to where Mutts in Need is where I'm going to meet Kym. I heard barking. Lots of barking. And as I'm driving down Riverside Drive, a cul-de-sac, it dawns on me that most of the houses I'm seeing in this residential neighborhood have "kennel" or something written on them. These are just homes, not businesses, or at least that's what they look from the outside.Kym told me that about 20 years ago, this street was zoned agricultural and that's why these residental homes ...

Eight Calls to Capture Your Dog's Attention in a Photo

The Swimming Border Collie of Ross Castle

As a pet photographer, I have many tricks up my sleeve when it comes to getting a dog's attention. From one of my pet photography groups, I learned hunting calls work well so of course I got me some.I also got a very hunting style lanyard to keep them on... so funny, I am about the last person who would ever hunt and yet I'm carrying around this thing like I had my own show on the Hunting Channel.I started out with a distressed cottontail and moved on to a variety of others... doe, squirrel, predator, hog and duck and a few dog whistles. The truth is, they may or may not work in pet photography. Some dogs do not respond to hunting calls at all. Couldn't care less about those noises. And ...

Meet Jax, the Sphynx Cat, Star of Stage and Screen

The Swimming Border Collie of Ross Castle

One of my clients/friends is Jayne Baker-Harrower, who runs the Bare Enough Sphynx Cattery in Phelan. Jayne and I met at a cat show last December when she was showing Channing, her Lykoi cat, which is one of the new breeds of cat. Lykois are called the werewolf cat, and the appearance  of their sparse fur is a natural mutation, not a designer breed. Jayne will be breeding Lykois though the first ones won't be available until next year. But her Sphynx are available and Jayne was recently contacted by Kateryna Shalayeva, lead singer of the band Stereolizza, because she wanted to use a Sphynx in her latest music video. So Jayne made the long trek to Los Angeles (with her adorable ...

My Pet Photography Identity -- What Keywords Fit My Photos
Saturday, March 28, 2015
The Swimming Border Collie of Ross Castle

I belong to a really interesting pet photographers group, one that includes the creme de la creme, the pioneers, the innovators, the teachers. I know, pinch me, I thank my lucky stars I'm in it, too!We just did an exercise this week that was really interesting. We submitted five images to the curator, Barbara Breitsameter, the owner of Poppy Blue Photography near Chicago. From those keywords, she developed a spreadsheet that had a number of keywords on it along with all of the images we submitted. We were to go through the pet photography and choose from that list of keywords what our impression was of each one. The words were:ArtisticBoldCandidClassicColorful ...
